I was always wondering if you lose them as contacts ? Can they still read your messages to them ?
Is there a reason to keep them in friends at all ?

If their avatar shows up as a silhouette (no picture available), then they have deleted that avatar. It is possible to restore deleted avatars, but only before approximately 20 days have elapsed. They cannot read your messages unless they somehow restore the avatar.
